Cendrillon

Costume Design Assistant

As a costume assistant for Cendrillon, I had the opportunity to work alongside the head designer, a third-year MFA candidate completing her thesis. The production embraced an "excess" theme, evoking the opulence and theatricality of the Capitol in The Hunger Games. Extravagant silhouettes, layered textures, and ornate details created a visually rich world, making Cendrillon’s simple, elegant gold gown all the more striking by contrast.

My role involved supporting the designer throughout the entire process, from early research to final strike. I sourced many costume elements from our extensive costume stock, sought out specialty fabrics and accessories when needed, and regularly attended fittings to take notes and troubleshoot adjustments. I also completed alterations on several garments, ensuring each piece fit the performers perfectly and aligned with the designer’s vision.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was the collaborative environment. The head designer frequently asked for my input, and several of my suggestions were incorporated into the final designs. This process helped me build confidence in my creative instincts and communication skills. As part of my training in the costume assistant course, I also served as a liaison between the designer and the wardrobe department, coordinating costume needs and making sure changes were clearly communicated. This role further developed my organization and problem-solving abilities.
