Practical Magic

Magic through movement

This project explores costume design inspired by Practical Magic, reimagined as a contemporary ballet. The goal was to translate the emotional tone and supernatural atmosphere of the film into movement-friendly costumes that support dance while still grounding the characters in the late 1990s setting.

The design approach focused on silhouettes and textures that evoke the film’s witchy, coastal aesthetic while allowing performers full physical freedom. Everyday clothing from the 1990s served as the foundation, adapted with stretch fabrics, softened structure, and layered pieces that could move fluidly with choreography. Natural textures, muted colors, and slightly worn details helped create a lived-in world that feels both magical and familiar.

Through these designs, the costumes support storytelling through movement, reflecting each character’s emotional state while maintaining the intimate, slightly mysterious tone that defines Practical Magic.
